HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEK:
WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK:
I hope everyone had a fantastic long weekend in the sunshine! We have a busy 4-day week ahead of us with a Eureka Science presentation (a program run by TRU Science students) about Force and Motion, the Scholastic Book Fair, and the school-wide Most Magnificent Thing project beginning.
This week’s Jolly Phonics sounds/letters are blends - “oi” (as in oil) and “ue” (as in blue). In Printing, we will work on lower case letters k, y, and j. Our class larvae have moved onto the next phase of the life cycle...chrysalis (aka: pupas)! In Science, we are continuing to research how butterflies live, their bodies, metamorphosis, and their needs for survival. We will also continue comparing moths and butterflies to learn their similarities and differences. The kids have made another graph predicting how long it will take for the adult butterflies to emerge from their chrysalises. Now we are patiently awaiting the arrival of our Painted Lady Butterflies (while being careful not to bump the tank full of delicate chrysalises!).
The school Scholastic Book Fair will be happening this week. Our class’s “Preview Book Look” time (just to check out what’s available) is Tuesday 23rd at 11:30am. Our “Book Buying Times” are Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th from 11:25-11:55pm – during this time, only students with money will be going to the book fair. With Kindies, I find it’s easy (and more secure so money does not get lost) if parents purchase books WITH their child during our class book buying times or after school (the Book Fair is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until 3:15pm). If you are sending money to school for your child to purchase a book, please clearly label the money and put it in the front of the Back and Forth folder.
School-wide “Most Magnificent Thing” Project-Based Learning May 23-June 2:
Students will work on developing their critical thinking skills to create and “most magnificent thing” out of empty boxes. We have already collected plenty of boxes. However, it would be excellent if families could help by bringing clean recyclables and reusable things like:

Students will work on developing their critical thinking skills to create and “most magnificent thing” out of empty boxes. We have already collected plenty of boxes. However, it would be excellent if families could help by bringing clean recyclables and reusable things like:
- Buttons, string, ribbon, pipe cleaners, aluminum foil, toothpicks, wooden stir sticks, pom poms, small white cups, small styrofoam plates, cupcake liners, cardboard tubes
REMINDERS/HOW PARENTS CAN HELP:
- HOTTER WEATHER IS HERE! Send a waterbottle and perhaps a hat for outside play
- Proper Footwear - running shoes are best for school (even in the hot weather, as there may be bees or insects on our playground/field).
- Send extra clothing in case your child has an accident or gets wet on the playground
- There are a few penguin projects in the class still as not all families have made arrangements for their child to share his/her learning (as a make-up for the Celebration of Learning). If you have not yet come, please send a note with your availability in your child’s Back & Forth folder or speak to Ms. Gartrell.
- Sign and return report card envelopes once you have read the term 2 report card (yes, there are still envelopes that haven’t been returned)
