I can’t believe this is the last full week of November! Time definitely flies. Now that the kids have been in Kindergarten for nearly 3 months, I am really working with them on gaining independence. We call this “doing our job(s)” (aka: responsibilities and routines). I encourage parents to drop their child off at the classroom door and let him/her do the morning routines independently (putting clothing on hook, changing shoes, putting agenda/lunch/library books where they belong and beginning our morning work – nametag in chart, practice printing name or looking at a book, etc). By all means come into the classroom if you need to speak with me or hand an order form in, etc. - let’s just allow the kids to get settled in on their own. :)
You may hear your child saying “Can you please help with my zipper/shoes/gloves/etc., I already tried by myself”. I have been encouraging the kids to try things on their own first, then to ask a friend, and finally ask the teacher. We have been working very hard to create a caring, helpful classroom community (to be “Bucket Fillers!”). Please know that if your child needs help after you leave in the morning, his/her classmates and I are there to help. I’d also like to give a friendly reminder about arriving to school on time. Many of our independent routines occur right at the start of our day, if a child arrives late, he/she misses this opportunity to show he/she is responsible.
HIGHLIGHT FROM LAST WEEK:
WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK:
We will focus on the letter "Ee” this week. The students made their own “Little Red Hen” character puppets last week and are ready to use Ms. Gartrell’s special puppet theatre to re-tell the story. In Math, we will continue to learn more about patterns and practice printing our numerals 0-10. Zero the Hero will also make another appearance on Friday, our 50th day of Kindergarten! We will continue to talk more about Social Responsibility and how to react to our feelings in appropriate ways (e.g., how to calm down when we are angry, how to take turns when we don’t want to share, etc).
This Thursday at lunch, the ME to WE Leadership students will be selling Purdy’s Chocolate Santa lollipops for $3. All proceeds will be going to the Me to We Global Project - Health Care in Haiti.

HIGHLIGHT FROM LAST WEEK:
- Learning a new phonics games called “Pass the Letter Bag”
- Using special highlighters to sort pictures that start with “c” and “k” (as both letters are “tricky” because they make the same sound)

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP:
- Our playdough is getting pretty flakey and dry. It would be wonderful if someone could donate a new batch J
- Review the “Jolly Phonics Sound Group #1” sheet (was sent home last week) with your child. Have him/her teach you the action and sound (perhaps even the song) that goes along with each letter.
- Dress for the weather every day! At this time, snow boots can be kept on the lower shelf of each child’s coat hook area. I will discuss with our school custodians about whether other arrangements will need to be made once the weather gets really wet/snowy.
