Wow, is it already November? Hopefully everyone had a safe, fun Halloween and remembered the time change on Sunday. Please remember to send your child dressed for the weather each school day. November weather can be unpredictable – one moment it is sunny and crisp, then next pouring rain and chilly.
Mrs. Linfitt made numerous announcements last Friday about our school-wide policy regarding Halloween candy – please do not send any to school with your child. If a teacher or school staff member finds a student with candy, it will be taken away. Thanks again for your cooperation with this matter. :)
HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEK:
The kids loved our first Young People’s Concert (YPC) trip to the Sagebrush Theatre where we were entertained by two improv actors from Vancouver. Having Mrs. Gustafson as a guest teacher while Ms. Gartrell was sick was also great. I still feel like I’m fighting off this never-ending cough/cold, but hopefully this week will be better. Kindergarten is what I call a "germ-factory", if your child is not feeling well please keep them home so the germs don't spread to everyone else. Another exciting event was Zero the Hero bringing the kids 30 pompom pumpkins to count (we played a game with them on Friday too!). Of course, Halloween and pumpkin activities like – Halloween Bingo, exploring pumpkins with our five senses, dressing in costumes, the Halloween dance and watching a pumpkin-fall themed movie with Mrs. Dhaliwal’s class we highlights too. Thanks again to those who donated pumpkins and the parents who came to help with our Pumpkin Math/Science centres on Friday! I couldn’t have done it without you (literally- it would not have been possible with 19 super excited children and 1 teacher!).
WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK:
We will focus on the letter "Pp" this week. Mrs. Buchart, our school Literacy Coordinator, will be visiting our class Tuesday and Wednesday to work with us on retelling a story.
Now that all the kids have had one turn as the Busy Bee, we will add another “perk” to the special day – “What Is It?” Sharing! When your child is the Busy Bee, he/she will bring home the What Is It? Sharing bag (it's a big zippered reusable shopping bag with animals all over it). Please look inside and read the info. sheet to help your child prepare for this exciting activity (INFO SHEET MUST STAY IN THE BAG for the next person). Your child can bring ONE item (MUST FIT IN THE BAG) to school the next morning to share with the class. Please do not send any valuable or extra sentimental objects to school.
We will continue practicing the correct formation of numbers, particularly numerals 3-5 this week. Mrs. Atkinson (our school numeracy teacher) will be coming to talk to us about patterns on Monday as well!
As some of you know, Ms. Gartrell grew up on an orchard and loves fruit! We will learn about how apples grow (and compare this life cycle to a pumpkin). Ms. Gartrell went to the Okanagan to visit her family two weeks ago and brought back some of her family’s delicious apples for the Kindies to taste-test this week.
We are continuing to learn about social responsibility and empathy by reading stories that focus on developing our Whole Body Listening skills, respecting personal space (our own and other’s), and Bucket- Filling. Our “How to Fill a Bucket” unit is based on the incredible book, “Have You Filled A Bucket Today?”. The concept of “Bucket Filling” means that when you do something kind for someone else, it fills his/her bucket (makes him/her feel good/happy/loved) and in turn, fills your own bucket. However, when you do something unkind to someone else, it empties his/her bucket (makes him/her feel sad/upset/lonely) as well as your own bucket. This concept correlates really well with our “Traffic Light” behaviour expectations too. You may hear your child talking a lot about bucket filling (green/blue choices) and dipping (yellow/red choices) this week. :)
