March 12th-16th, 2018
What a sunny Sunday we had today! Hopefully, Daylight Savings hasn’t thrown your family off too much. We have 1 more week until Spring Break! The Lost and Found is VERY full right now and clothing will be donated this Friday, so please check to see if any items are your child’s.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEK:
WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK
This week’s Jolly Phonics sound/letters are another vowel team “ie” (as in tie). The kids have loved playing new “Vowel Team” games on Starfall.com (oh boy, does the “Two Vowels Go Walking” song get stuck in our heads!) In Printing, we will begin printing LOWERCASE LETTERS: c and o (starting with Magic C letters as they are formed the same regardless of upper or lowercase-size) ! We will read a “Pete the Cat” story and practice retelling and sequencing events. We will also play some Pete the Cat-themed literacy and math games. I hope we have enough time with our Big Buddies to make a St. Patrick’s Day art project this week too.
This week we will continue or Healthy Living theme by talking more about healthy habits like eating a balanced diet, avoiding spreading germs with proper hand-washing and personal hygiene and keeping our bodies safe using the Be Safe program. The kids are enjoying the songs and stories that “Trusty the Puppet” brings for us each Be Safe lesson. A yellow newsletter with detailed info. about the first three Be Safe lesson topics was sent home last Friday.
The kids liked the Sugary Drinks demonstration we did last week where we matched drinks to a cup with the equivalent amount of white sugar. We talked about looking for nutrition labels on foods and drinks and how reading them can help us make healthy choices. The kids were amazed by how much added sugar is in fruit juice not from concentrate, pop and slushies (we talked about how pop and slushies are “once-in-a-while-treats”:) )! Consuming too much of these sugary drinks mean the kids' energy spikes quickly (“hyper” behaviour) and then crashes (“meltdowns, cranky behaviour”), shortly after. Canada's Food Guide recommends that children aged 4-8 years consume less than 10 teaspoons (40 grams/50 ml) of added sugar per day. This means one 200 ml juice-box (that is not 100% fruit juice) contains HALF of a child's daily sugar intake and one can of 335ml pop contains 100% of a their added sugar intake! Sugary drinks “bump out” other nutritious beverages, contribute to higher caffeine intake, and a higher risk of dental cavities. When children fill up on sugary drinks, they consume fewer nutritious foods and beverages (especially milk) and risk deficiencies of essential nutrients. I have encouraged the kids (and their parents too :) ) to “BUMP OUT” and/or limit SUGARY DRINKS at school by only bringing water, white milk or one 100% fruit juice box in their lunches. Thanks for your cooperation! I also really appreciate how respectful parents have been about promoting healthy snacks and treats by refraining from sending candy and sweets to school! :D
