I can’t believe how quickly the year has flown by. We only have 4 more weeks of Kindergarten! A reminder that SD73 converted to a new Safe Arrival program owned by SchoolMessenger on June 1. However, the Student Absence Reporting System number did not change and still remains 1-844-350-2647. For questions or further information, please contact the school.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEK:
WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK:
This week’s very last Jolly Phonics sounds/letter blends are “er” (as in “mixer”) and “ar” (as in “bark”)! The kids have loved the phonics program this year and I have witnessed wonderful growth in their literacy skills. During Phonics and Read to Self time, the kids are beginning to use emergent reading strategies to help them problem-solve when they are stuck on a word: using pictures for clues, looking at the initial letter, and “chunking” (finding smaller words within a word - “cat” and “pill” in caterpillar)
In Printing, we will practice printing the LAST TWO lowercase letters in our books: x, and z. We are so close to the end of our printing workbooks now!
In Math Centers, we will work on the concept of capacity and volume (“which holds more?”).
In Science, we are continuing to research butterflies. The kids are eager to “show what they know” in their Butterfly Inquiry booklets - we have covered appearance and habitats. Now we will move on to a butterfly’s needs for survival and what environmental concerns affect them. We will also continue comparing moths and butterflies to learn more about their similarities and differences.
In Applied Skills and Design (ASD), we will begin our on-going class quilt project! My mom (who knows much more about quilting that I do) helped me cut all the squares this weekend so we are ready to get started. Reminder to those people I have previously contacted about volunteering to help with the sewing, please send me a quick email or note in your child’s folder with the days you are free this week (and likely the following week). I am assuming this project will take us the next 3-4 weeks to complete as we will only be doing a little bit each week, so we will be flexible with whatever time volunteers have available. :)
