There will be no school on Friday as teachers will be participating in a Professional Development Day to learn about our new curriculum that will be implemented in the fall.
WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK:
This week, we will focus on the letter “Oo”. The kids were very excited to begin reading on their own! We have been segmenting (“stretch out” = c - a - t) and blending words with our big letter cards and Ms. Gartrell’s “sound wand”. We also started Big Buddy Reading with Mrs. Atkinson’s grade 4/5 class last Friday! Please have your child read the mini-books that are sent home in the agenda (we usually look at a new book every week or two). I think you will be amazed by what wonderful “word detectives” they are becoming. The students are doing well with printing their first AND last names first thing in the morning.
In Math, we will continue to learn more about opposites and prepositions (up, down, under, over, etc.) and work on sequencing (first, second, third, etc.). We began our penguin unit last week because the kids were so eager and excited. We will continue to learn more about these fun flightless birds in Science, Math, Art and Language Arts.
The Kindies learned a lot about me during my “Star Student of the Week” demo. I even put my ballet pointe shoes on for them (ouch, it’s been years since I’ve danced in those! haha). This week’s Star Student is JANE! She will share her special things/books/memories with the class this week and take care of our class stuffie Pete until Thursday (as there is no school on Friday). A new child will take the Star Student bag home Thursday afternoon. When it is your child’s turn, please carefully read the info. sheets in the Star Student Bag and the class journal as soon as your child brings home the bag. In order for all children to have their special week before the end of the school year, we need to ensure the bag, journal, and stuffie are all returned to school and ready to go home with the next child every Friday (or Thurs. if there is a Pro-D day or holiday).
Another reminder, that all Parkcrest students are being asked to STAY OFF ALL THE SNOW PILES throughout our school yard as they have melted and frozen several times. For the time being, ALL snow piles are off limits to students. Please remind your child to stay off the hills before, during and after school (no longer just those by our parking lots). We have also had some students in our class eating the BLUE SNOW (the snow that has been salted and cannot be eaten!). Please remind your child that eating the blue snow (and all dirty snow for that matter) is not safe and will likely make them sick. Thanks for reinforcing this at home, we appreciate your cooperation. :)
