February is going to be a fun-filled, busy month of special events! Please be sure to read the pink paper newsletter that was sent home Friday, Jan. 29th. I included the same info. about Valentine’s Day and 100th Day at the end of this blog entry.
WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK:
We will be celebrating Groundhog Day and Chinese New Year this week! Our new letter this week is Ll. In phonics, the kids have loved playing the game “The Quiet Machine” on the Smartboard (http://pbskids.org/lions/games/) to identifying the first sound and letter we hear in words. We have completed our first printing duotang and have moved on to Printing #2! Please have your child review all of the letter’s names and corresponding sounds in his/her duotang #1.
In Math, we are continuing to work with numbers and graph our predictions for Groundhog Day! This month the students will also start to number their own February calendar, this will increase their understanding in how to read a calendar independently. The kids have loved learning about penguins. We wrapped up our Pengiun theme last week by watching "March of the Penguins" with Mrs. Dhaliwal's class. We will now begin our monthly theme about Healthy Living & Healthy Hearts (positive/caring relationships, family, nutrition, exercise, parts of the body).
This week’s Star Student is Grayson. Our school “Change for Change” coin drive for families living El Limonal garbage Dump in Nicaragua, has already raised $300! The coin drive officially runs from Feb.9-12th, so it’s been amazing to see how enthusiastic and eager the students are to help with this wonderful cause. I was lucky enough to see a pre-screening of the film “Gringos in the Garbage” (based on the families Parkcrest's fundraiser will support in El Limonal) this weekend. It was a such a fantastic film which got me even more excited about the project :)

FEBRUARY 12th VALENTINE'S DAY – will be celebrated in our classroom on Friday, 12th. Students are welcome to wear pink or red. Parents are asked to work with their child to create a Valentine's “mailbox” to bring to school with his/her Valentines. The children will be provided with a brown paper lunch bag and a “heart animal” to colour, cut, and glue on their lunch bag (assembly directions will be included). Please ensure your child's name is clearly printed on the bag so everyone can read it when we deliver cards in the afternoon. The bag will be sent home on Friday 12th, full of valentines for your child to open with you at home.
We strive to be an inclusive and caring classroom; therefore, if your child is giving out Valentines please include ALL the children. The students names in our classroom are as follows:
- Mason - Keirra - Lacey - Payton - Natalie
- Jaxen - Blaike - Sadie - Tyson - Jadeon
- Julian - Lyric - Mia - Luca - Ashton
- Grayson - Raelyn - Rylan - Breanna - Jane
We would love to celebrate Valentine's day with some healthy snacks (please remember we promote healthy living and eating habits in our classroom, if candy is given out by students it will be brought home in the Valentine's bags). I will be posting a signup sheet for snacks and non-food items (napkins, paper plates) on the bulletin board outside our classroom on Thurs. Feb. 4. This will help make sure we aren’t wasting food or eating too much and getting tummy aches! :) Thanks so much!
100th DAY OF KINDERGARTEN – Students are encouraged to create a collection of 100 with anything they like (preferably objects that are easy to transport to and from school). Some favourite collections are 100 pasta noodles, coins, toothpicks, stickers, cereal, or beads. Please have your child group the objects in groups of 10 and label 10, 20, 30, etc. before bringing the
collection to school. I would suggest making a poster display or storing the objects in ziplock bags, an empty egg carton or tupperware containers, etc. Students can bring their collections to school on the 25th when we will have a fun-filled day of 100 activities and games.
I will be looking for 34 parent/grandparent volunteers to help out with 100 day activities between
10:30-11:50 am on the 25th. If you are able, please sign up on the Parent-Volunteer sheet (outside our classroom door) or send me a note in your child's agenda. Thanks for your help! :)
See you Monday!
